DEFINITION The purpose of this position is to protect life and property through Firefighting and Medical First Responder/EMT activities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Reports to the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, and Fire Captain. Exercises no supervision.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES —
Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Lays and connects hose, holds nozzles, and directs water streams, raise and climbs ladders and uses chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines and other equipment at the scene of fires.
Perform salvage operations.
Administers Medical First Responder/EMT duties to injured persons.
Participates in fire drills and attends classes in firefighting and related duties.
Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of the Fire Department property.
Inspects commercial and noncommercial buildings.
Organize fire brigades and conducts fire drills in institutions and commercial establishments.
Participates in physical fitness activities to maintain physical conditioning.
Attend public gatherings to ensure observance of fire safety requirements.
Participates in radio tests.
Conduct tours of station house for scout, civic and other interested groups.
Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
The principles, practices, methods, and equipment employed in firefighting.
Firefighting, Medical First Responder/EMT practices, and hazardous materials incidents.
Fire hazards and prevention techniques.
The use of fire records and their application to fire prevention and fire protection administration.
The rules and regulations of the department, city, state, and federal laws and ordinances pertaining to fire prevention.
Ability to:
Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
Work at heights greater than ten (10) feet.
Operate power driven machinery, such as, lawn mowers and rescue tools.
Move objects between 20-50 pounds short distances (20 feet or more).
Observe or monitor people’s behavior to assess patient condition.
Communicate orally with customers, clients or the public in face-to face, one-on-one settings.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
Perceive red, yellow, and blue colors to recognize hazards identified by fire diamonds.
Tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing job duties.
Work for long periods, requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration.
Rely on sense of sight and hearing to help determine the nature of an emergency and make operational decisions.
Make life and death decisions during emergency situations.
Work in confined spaces such as attic crawl spaces.
Travel across wet, slippery, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
Perform safe fire fighting and rescue practices.
Enter data or information into a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device.
Comprehend and make inferences from written material in the English language.
Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.
Work safely without representing a direct threat to self or others.
Make fine, highly controlled muscular movements to adjust the position of control mechanisms such as operating levers, pedals, and valves.
Learn job related material through structured lecture and reading and through oral instruction and observation. This learning takes place in both a classroom setting and in an on-the-job training setting.
Observe or monitor objects to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time to perform emergency medical services or perform duties on the fire ground.
Perform duties requiring frequent pulling of 40 pounds or more, such as removing hose from apparatus, pulling ceilings, starting power equipment, and opening doors on the apparatus
Lift arms above shoulder level to cut vent holes with an axe or to force entry into automobiles using specialized tools.
Use Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus and protective clothing to prevent exposure to hazardous materials and infectious diseases.
Additional Requirements, Abilities, or Skills:
The performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City Business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
A working telephone at principal place of residence. A working cell phone is allowed.
The ability to read and comprehend written material at a level appropriate for the class.
Fire Fighter I and II certificate with the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) seal.
Certificate of Completion of an Awareness Level Hazardous Materials with an IFSAC seal.
Certificate of Completion of Operations Level Hazardous Materials with an IFSAC seal.
PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED
Associates Degree in Business Administration or Fire Science.
EMT Certificate
Certificate of Completion of NIMS Training 100, 200, 700, 800
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
High School Diploma or equivalent GED
Firefighter I and II Certification with an International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) seal.
Certificate of Completion of an Awareness Level Hazardous Materials with an IFSAC seal.
Certificate of Completion of Operations Level Hazardous Materials with an IFSAC seal.
Certificate of completion of Medical First Responder.

Physical Conditions Essential and other important responsibilities and duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, running, walking, crawling, climbing, stooping, and lifting for prolonged periods of time.

Miscellaneous Requirements
May be required to work shifts including nights, weekends, or holidays.
Subject to emergency call-in.
Must have a working telephone at principal place of residence.
Must successfully complete pre-employment substance abuse testing, background investigation, and physical.
Will be subject to random substance abuse testing.
